The Overwhelming Influx of Terrorists into Iraq Is An Obvious Indicator of What A Mess We've Made of Iraq... Right?

Wrong. More than wrong, just plain silly. In fact, this has to be one of the most absurd assertions I have ever heard. And that's saying a lot, considering the endless fodder liberals provide me with daily, without my even needing to ask. But this is just ridiculous.

Let's think about this.

So, terrorists have come flooding over the border into Iraq. And at their hands, American and international troops, the Iraqi police and military, and the Iraqi people have suffered and continue to suffer violent, deadly attacks. None of this is disputed. It's the conclusion that's missing something... logic, perhaps?

Let's ask ourselves, why are they attacking us? (For it is primarily us that they are attacking, though they do also direct some attacks at rookie Iraqi peace keepers.) Those who point to these attacks as proof that Iraq was a mistake would say, I suppose, that it's because they hate us. The argument being that by going into Iraq, we've drawn all these terrorists to the country, making it worse there than it was before. At least, I think that's the argument... It lacks an element of coherency, so I can't be sure. (For the moment, let's just let slide the absolutely absurd, ridiculously ignorant, politically motivated assertion that anything short of Hitler or nuclear holocaust could be worse than Saddam Hussein. Smile and nod, because it's so outlandish that it's not even worth entertaining the idea by responding to it.) But if that were their only reason for attacking us, then they had ample opportunity to do so long before our increased presence in Iraq. Not to disagree with the assertion that they hate us, because they clearly do. But if that was the only reason, they could have hit the 100,000 troops stationed on the border of Iraq since the Gulf War. Or if not there, then in dozens of other locations. But that's not why they've all the sudden come flooding in to attack us. The reason is that they don't want us in Iraq, more so than anywhere else right now. They were fine with us on the border of Iraq. Perhaps it wasn't their preference, but they had bigger concerns. But now that we're in Iraq, this becomes top priority.

The reason they're attacking us is because they want us to leave.

Next question: Why do they want us to leave? Well, I'm pretty sure it's not because of some sense of Arabic brotherhood. They want us to leave because of what we are doing there. Because what we are doing there is detrimental to their goal, which is terrorism. Because they are deathly afraid of a free, democratic Iraq. Freedom is the antithesis of terrorism. A free nation fights against terrorism. A free people have an interest in defeating terrorism, because terrorism threatens freedom.

And related to that, yet distinctly different, is another reason that they want us out of Iraq. It's that if we acheive our goal in Iraq, terrorists will no longer be able to operate out of Iraq. Liberals will focus on the fact that no direct link was found between Saddam and Al Qaeda, and that is not disputed. But their focus on that single fact allows them to turn a blind eye to the fact that Iraq has a long, well-known history of harboring and even helping terrorists, including Al Qaeda. And if Iraq remains free, and democracy succeeds, then terrorists will no longer be able to operate out of Iraq. Terrorists will be on the run in Iraq. That's why it's so important to them that they get us out of Iraq before we acheive our goal there.

Clearly, then, the reason terrorists are so intent on sabotaging our work in Iraq and forcing us out is that everything that we are doing in Iraq is very bad for terrorism. Freedom in Iraq will be an extremely powerful weapon against terrorism in the Middle East. It will put them on the run in Iraq, and on the defensive everywhere else.

If it's so important to terrorists that Iraq not be freed from tyranny and given democracy, shouldn't that make it that much more important to us that freedom and democracy succeed in Iraq? Of course. For whatever terrorists deem worth fighting to keep must be worth our fighting to take away. Because what's bad for terrorism is good for us.

The overwhelming influx of terrorism into Iraq isn't a sign of our failure in Iraq. It's an indicator of our success.
